Stromboli is a classic Italian dish. A rolled-up pizza with pepperoni, capicola, and tons of melted cheese. The best part is this recipe is very versatile!
Ingredients
1 ½ c. freshly shredded mozzarella cheese
1 pound frozen bread dough or 1 lb. of prepared pizza dough – I buy mine in a three lb. pack of three loaves of bread
¼ pound sliced capicola from the deli counter
¼ pound sliced pepperoni from the deli counter
1 ½ teaspoons of pizza seasoning
marinara sauce for dipping (optional)
1 egg + 1 tablespoon water mixed (optional)
How to make Stromboli
Step 1: On a large greased baking sheet, place the dough. Tent it using plastic wrap. Place the dough in the fridge for about 6 to 8 hours or overnight to defrost. Then, take it out of the fridge and let the dough sit for about 1 to 2 hours. If desired, you can also use prepared pizza dough.
Step 2: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 400 degrees.
Step 3: Lightly flour a large working surface and rolling pin. Roll the dough into a long 8 x 13-inch rectangle.
Step 4: On top of the dough, layer the pepperoni and sprinkle with ⅓ of the cheese. Over the cheese, make a layer of capicola and sprinkle it with the rest of the cheese. Then, sprinkle with 1 tsp of the pizza seasoning, then season with salt and pepper.
Step 5: Roll the dough tightly (jellyroll style), then tuck the ends over. To seal, pinch the sides.
Step 6: Using a nonstick spray, grease the baking sheet. Place the Stromboli into the prepared pan. If using, brush the Stromboli with egg wash.
Step 7: Sprinkle the Stromboli with the rest of the pizza seasoning. Then, bake the Stromboli for about 20 minutes until crisp and golden brown.
Step 8: Remove from the oven when done and allow the Stromboli to sit for about 1 to 2 minutes before slicing.
Step 9: Serve and enjoy!
