One-pan meals that are both simple and satisfying. We love the adaptability of this recipe for Italian Sausage with Peppers and Onions. You may put it on a sandwich, or serve it over mashed potatoes, pasta, polenta, or cauliflower rice.
This easy and quick dish is also very versatile. You can use your preferred sausages to make this. My go-to is Italian sausage. This savory one-skillet meal is a head-turner and will surely make everyone drool!
Ingredients
1 lb sweet Italian sausage
¼ c. extra-virgin olive oil
2 yellow onions, sliced
2 bell peppers, sliced
1 tbsp Italian seasoning
¼ c. chopped fresh basil leaves
4 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 c. Marsala wine (or chicken broth)
Salt to taste
¼ tsp red pepper flakes, optional
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 (15-oz.) can of diced tomatoes
How to make Italian Sausage Peppers and Onions
Step 1: In a heavy large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the sausages and cook for about 7 to 10 minutes or until both sides are brown. Take the sausages out of the pan and drain.
Step 2: In the same pan, add the Italian seasoning, basil, and garlic. Cook over medium heat for about 2 minutes.
Step 3: Pour in the Marsala wine and add the tomatoes, and tomato paste, and stir, add chili flakes (optional). Then, add the peppers and onions. Season with salt and pepper. Bring everything to a simmer.
Step 4: To the pan, add the sausage back. Adjust the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
Step 5: To serve, spoon the Italian sausage, peppers, and onions over mashed potatoes, noodles, polenta, or cauliflower rice. Or you can serve it in a sandwich. In half lengthwise, split the hoagie rolls, then hollow out the bread from the bottom side of each roll. Make sure not to puncture the crust. With the sausage mixture, fill the bottom half of the roll. Enjoy!
