Apple Dumplings are my family’s favorite! Crescent rolls filled with fresh apples and flavored with Mountain Dew and more butter. Serve this freshly baked with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzles of the amazing sauce from the pan.
Ingredients
1 1⁄2 c. sugar
2 granny smith apples
1 c. butter (2 sticks)
1 tsp vanilla
2 (8 oz.) can crescent rolls
1 small (8-ounce) can of Mountain Dew soda (or ⅔ of a 12 oz. can)
Cinnamon, to taste (you will sprinkle over the top)
How to make Pioneer Woman’s Apple Dumplings
Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 350 degrees F. Using butter or cooking spray, grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
Step 2: Slice the peeled and cored apples into 8 pieces each.
Step 3: After opening the crescent rolls, separate each into a triangle. In a crescent roll, roll each apple slice starting at the wide end.
Step 4: Into the prepared baking dish, place the rolls.
Step 5: Melt the butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl, or a saucepan. To the melted butter, barely stir the sugar. Next, add the vanilla and stir well.
Step 6: Over the apple rolls, pour the butter mixture. Around the edges, pour the Mountain Dew and a little down the middle. Then, sprinkle with cinnamon.
Step 7: Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 to 40 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Step 8: Remove from the oven when done, and serve the Apple Dumplings with a scoop of ice cream. Do not forget to spoon a little sauce from the pan over the top. Enjoy!
NOTES:
For the spices, you can also add ginger and nutmeg in addition to cinnamon.
Feel free to use any soda that is like Mountain Dew. You need 1 cup or 8 ounces of Ginger ale or lemon-lime soda if pouring from a large bottle. Diet or Zero versions are a great option to cut back on sugar.
You can also use whipped cream instead of vanilla ice cream.
Into an airtight container, transfer any remaining sauce and reheat it before drizzling over ice cream.
Use peaches in place of apples for a nice variation.
Make these apple dumplings right before baking and serve them freshly baked.
