These simple Old-Fashioned Cabbage Rolls are filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, coated in tomato sauce, and so scrumptious. Stuffed Cabbage is an old-fashioned, easy-to-make, and comforting family recipe. Cabbage leaves are stuffed with the combination of beef, onion, mustard, and brown rice. The leaf is then nestled in a baking dish, and a cooked tomato sauce overlays the whole thing and bakes it. Choose a simple pasta sauce if the tomato sauce is not on hand. Alternatively, you could use a couple of canned tomatoes and tomato sauce (more on that later).
You can serve this deliciously hearty recipe with a green salad tossed with sliced mushrooms, cherry or grape tomatoes, and a simple dressing of salad vinaigrettes. Some brownies or a special form of bar cookie will be great for dessert.
Ingredients:
⅔ cup of water
⅓ cup uncooked white rice
(8) large leaf (blank)s cabbage leaves
1 pound lean ground beef
¼ cup chopped onion
(1) egg, slightly beaten
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
(1) (10.75 oz) can of condensed tomato soup
Directions:
Let the water boil in a medium saucepan. Add rice and stir. Lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
In a large, wide saucepan, put some salt in the water and let it boil. Add cabbage leaves and cook for 2 to 4 minutes or until softened; drain.
In a medium mixing bowl, add and combine the ground beef, a cup cooked rice, onion, egg, salt, and pepper, along with 2 tbsp of tomato soup. Mix thoroughly.
Divide the beef mixture evenly among the cabbage leaves. Roll and secure it with toothpicks or string.
In a large skillet over medium heat, place the cabbage rolls and pour the remaining tomato soup over the top. Cover and let it boil, decrease the heat to low, and simmer for 40 minutes, often stirring and basting with the liquid.
