Ingredients:
1 cup elbow macaroni cooked according to package directions
1 ½ cups white sauce (recipe to follow)
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
buttered crumbs
WHITE SAUCE
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups whole milk
salt and pepper to taste
BUTTERED CRUMBS
1 sleeve round buttery crackers, crushed (i.e. townhouse)
3 tablespoons melted butter
Directions:
Prepare the oven and preheat to 190 degrees C or 375 degrees F.
Apply cooking spray in a 2.75-quart Pyrex baking dish.
Refer to the directions provided on the package of the macaroni on how to cook it. Drain and set aside.
Place a saucepan on the stove and turn the heat to medium.
Add butter and allow it to melt.
Add flour and cook until brown.
Add milk, salt, and pepper. Stir until well mixed. Simmer for a few minutes until the texture of the sauce becomes thick.
Remove the pan from the heat, then add cheese and stir until well blended.
Add the macaroni and toss until well coated with the sauce.
Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
In a mixing bowl, add butter and crushed crackers. Stir until well mixed.
Sprinkle the mixture over the casserole.
Place it inside the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes or until it turns golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes at room temperature.
