Name it, these Fried Green Tomatoes are perfect to eat any time of the day! The batter is what I love the most about this recipe. It just gives a delicious flavor to the tomatoes after frying. Enjoy the crispy texture in each bite!
Ingredients:
4 large unripe tomatoes, cut into ½-inch thick slices
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 c stone-ground cornmeal
1 1⁄2 c buttermilk
1 tbsp unsalted butter
1 c all-purpose flour
A pinch of cayenne
½ c vegetable oil
Lemon wedge, for serving
Hot pepper sauce, for serving
Kosher salt
Fresh ground black pepper
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, add cayenne, cornmeal, garlic powder, and flour. Whisk everything until well incorporated.
In a separate mixing bowl, add salt, pepper, and buttermilk. Stir until well blended.
Coat each tomato with buttermilk, then with the cornmeal mixture. Make sure to cover each well.
Put a skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium. Add oil and allow it to become hot.
Add the coated tomatoes into the hot skillet, then cook each side for about 3 to 4 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
Transfer the fried tomatoes onto a clean plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serve right away with lemon and hot pepper sauce. Enjoy!
Note:
I highly recommend serving these treats hot for the best experience.
