Prep Time: 5 mins | Cook Time: 15 mins | Total Time: 20 mins | Servings: 12 onion patties
My family loves these Onion Patties from the Amish. These onion patties are a lot like onion rings. These delicious onion patties are wonderful snacks and appetizers. Incredibly easy and quick to throw together. Also excellent to serve guests or a big crowd. Simply double or triple the recipe. You can even keep these onion rings in the fridge for a couple of days and reheat them before serving. These onion patties are great to serve with ketchup, salsa, ranch dressing, or any other kind of dip.
I make sure to whip up a big batch of these onion patties because they run out fast! Easily double or triple the recipe when preparing to serve these to a large crowd. I just made these onion patties again two days ago, and my kids are already requesting these onion patties again!
Ingredients
2 tsp white granulated sugar
1 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp cornmeal, self-rising or regular
1 c. milk
½ c. cooking oil – I used Canola
2 ½ c. chopped onions I used 1 ½ large white onions, chopped
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
How to make Onion Patties
Step 1: In a large bowl, place the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cornmeal. Mix well until combined. Add the chopped onions and pour in the milk. Using a spoon, mix everything well.
Step 2: In a skillet, heat the oil. Once hot, drop the mixture by spoonfuls and cook until the first side is brown. Flip and continue to cook the other side. For each patty, I use a ¼ c measuring cup. If needed, add more oil.
Note:
If you prefer hot and spicy patties, you are welcome to add some garlic powder or hot sauce (or any other seasonings) to the batter before cooking.
