This is a simple recipe to make our favorite Old Fashioned Goulash packed with ground beef, tomatoes, and macaroni. A delicious, filling retro goulash recipe that we love since we were kids! Tastes like spaghetti with the perfect ratio of noodles and meat. This Goulash has a casserole-like consistency, but feels free to add a cup or so of beef broth if you prefer a soup-like goulash.
Ingredients
1 large Yellow Onion, diced
2 tbsp Olive Oil
2 pounds Lean Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
3 large cloves Garlic, pressed or finely minced
2 – 14.5-oz. cans of Diced Tomatoes with juice, or stewed tomatoes
1 c. Low Sodium Beef Broth (chicken broth if using ground turkey)
2 – 15-oz. cans of Tomato Sauce
2 tsp Low Sodium Soy Sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)
2 tsp Italian Seasoning
1 tbsp Paprika
2 c. Uncooked Small Elbow Macaroni
1 tsp Black Pepper
2 tsp Seasoned Salt (such as Johnny’s®)
2 large Bay Leaves
How to make Old Fashioned Goulash
Step 1: On medium-high, heat a Dutch oven or soup pot. Add the oil to the hot pot followed by the ground beef or turkey. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often until browned. Discard some of the excess greases.
Step 2: To the pot with the ground beef, add the diced onion, garlic, and bay leaves. Continue to cook for another 4 minutes, stirring often. Then, pour in the broth. Add the diced tomatoes along with the tomato sauce, soy sauce, seasoned salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Stir well.
Step 3: Adjust the heat to low. Put the lid on and cook for additional 15 minutes, stirring often.
Step 4: Next, add the uncooked macaroni noodles and stir. Replace the lid and cook for 15 to 25 minutes more or until the pasta is cooked.
Step 5: Take the bay leaves out and discard them.
Step 6: Serve the Goulash immediately. Enjoy!
Note:
Increase the beef broth by a cup or so if you prefer a soup-like goulash.
