Enjoy a restaurant-quality dinner at home with this sweet, savory, spicy, and tangy General Tso’s Chicken. It’s one of my favorite take-out dishes. For a filling meal, enjoy these delicious pieces of chicken tossed in a mouthwatering sauce with rice.
Ingredients
CORNSTARCH SLURRY:
¼ c. soy sauce
¾ c. cornstarch
1 egg beaten
SAUCE:
1½ teaspoon fresh garlic, minced
¼ c. cornstarch
⅛ c. water
¼ c. sugar
⅛ c. white vinegar
¼ c. soy sauce
⅛ c. white wine
To serve the chicken separate from the sauce, add ¾ cup + 2 tablespoons of water + 2 dashes of soy to the sauce mixture
2 c. chicken broth
OTHER:
2 bunches of green onions
2 pounds chicken breasts – cut into cubes
Broccoli
5-8 dried chilies
How to make General Tso’s Chicken
Step 1: In a quart jar, place the sauce ingredients. Seal and shake the jar to mix. If desired, make this in advance and simply shake before using.
Step 2: In a bowl, add the cornstarch slurry. Add extra cornstarch if needed and mix until you have a peanut butter-like consistency.
Step 3: In the cornstarch slurry mix, place the pieces of chicken. Toss to coat the chicken well.
Step 4: In a wok with hot oil, cook the chicken in batches until crispy. Remove from the wok when done and transfer the chicken to a paper towel to drain. To keep the chicken warm, place it in the oven (set to the warmest setting). Then, cook the remaining chicken.
Step 5: In the same wok, saute the green onions and hot pepper for about 30 seconds. Then, stir in the sauce and continue to cook until thickened. Return the chicken to the wok and add the broccoli. Quickly stir and cook for another minute or two.
Step 6: Serve General Tso’s Chicken immediately with rice. Enjoy!
