I love apples so much! This recipe is perfect. A big thanks to my dear friend, Mildred, for giving me this incredible recipe. These Pie Bars are perfect for breakfast and snacks! Feel free to tweak it a little. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, chilled
1 egg yolk
.66 cup milk
1 cup crushed cornflakes cereal
8 cups thinly sliced apples
1 cup white sugar
1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 egg white
2 tablespoons white sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 ½ teaspoons milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Step 1: Prepare the oven and preheat to 175 degrees C or 350 degrees F.
Step 2: In a medium mixing bowl, sift the flour and salt. Add 1 cup of butter and stir until well mixed.
Step 3: Add egg yolk and ⅔ cup of milk. Stir until well mixed.
Step 4: Split the dough into two and roll one out on a lightly floured surface, then press it on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan.
Step 5: Sprinkle cereal on top of the crust followed by apples.
Step 6: In a small mixing bowl, add the nutmeg, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1 cup sugar. Stir until well mixed.
Step 7: Spread the mixture on top of the apple layer.
Step 8: Roll out the seconds dough on top and make sure to cover everything.
Step 9: Brush egg white on top of the crust and sprinkle ½ teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons sugar.
Step 10: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour or until the top turns brown.
Step 11: In a small mixing bowl, add 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, ½ tablespoons milk, and ½ teaspoon of vanilla. Stir until well mixed.
Step 12: Remove the Pie Bars from the oven and drizzle the sugar mixture on top of the bars.
Step 13: Serve and enjoy!
