Ingredients:
(4) cups Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, enriched, bleached
4 tbsp Sugars, granulated
1 tsp Leavening agents, baking soda
1 tbsp Baking Powder
½ tsp salt, table
(½) cup Margarine, soft, corn (hydrogenated and regular)
1 cup of milk, buttermilk, fluid, cultured, low fat
(1) egg, whole, raw, fresh
¼ cup Butter, with salt
¼ cup Milk, buttermilk, fluid, cultured, low fat
Directions:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease lightly a large baking sheet.
In a large bowl, add and mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine. Stir in a cup of buttermilk and egg. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form a round shape in the dough and put it on a prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with ¼ cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.
In the preheated oven, bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean for 45 to 50 minutes. Check after 30 minutes for doneness. You will continue to brush the butter mixture with the loaf while it is baking.
