Prep Time: 5 mins | Cook Time: 15 mins | Total Time: 20 minutes | Servings: 12 onion patties
These onion patties are awesome snacks and appetizers. I love serving these with salsa, ketchup, or ranch dressing. You are welcome to enjoy these onion patties with any other kind of dip you prefer. My kids commented that these delicious onion patties taste a lot like fried onion rings, and I could not agree more! If serving a crowd, easily double or triple the recipe. You can also keep leftovers (if any) in the fridge for a couple of days and simply reheat them before serving.
I made these onion patties again last night and as expected it was a blast! My kids fought for the last piece! Next time I’ll make sure to triple the recipe to ensure everyone will have enough. Enjoy these tasty onion patties as a side for any meal or as your next big hit appetizer the next time you throw a party!
Ingredients
½ c. cooking oil – I used Canola
2 ½ c. chopped onions – I used 1 ½ large white onions, chopped
2 tsp white granulated sugar
1 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp cornmeal, self-rising or regular
1 c. milk
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
How to make Onion Patties
Step 1: In a large bowl, place the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cornmeal. Mix well until blended. Then, stir in the chopped onions. Add the milk. Using a spoon, mix everything well.
Step 2: In a skillet, heat the oil. Into the hot oil, drop the patties by spoonfuls and cook until the first side is brown. Flip and continue to cook the other side until brown. For this, I use a ¼ c measuring cup. If needed, add extra oil to the skillet while frying.
Note:
If you prefer the onion patties, hot and spicy, feel free to add some garlic powder or hot sauce (or any other seasonings) to the batter.
