How to make The Most Amazing Lasagna
Step 1: Put the ground meats in a big pot and cook them over medium heat. Cut the meat into small pieces using a spoon as they cook. Next, add the onion and garlic and continue to cook until the meat is browned. Add the sugar, chopped parsley, fennel, oregano, ½ teaspoon salt, pepper, and fresh basil. Stir well until combined. Then, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and wine. Give it a good stir and adjust the heat to low. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 1 to 4 hours, stirring often.
Step 2: In the meantime, lay the lasagna noodles in the bottom of a pan. Directly over the noodles, pour the hot tap water. Ensure the lasagna is fully immersed in the water. Allow the noodles to soak for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, drain and discard the water.
Step 3: Place the ricotta cheese with egg, the rest of the 2 tbsp parsley, ½ tsp salt, and nutmeg in a mixing bowl. Mix well until combined and keep in the fridge until ready to use.
Step 4: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 375 degrees. Ready a 9 x 13-inch deep pan. Lightly grease and set aside.
Step 5: In the bottom of the prepared pan, spread about 1 c of the meat sauce. Top with 4 noodles and spread ⅓ of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles. On top, add ¼ mozzarella cheese slices. Over the mozzarella, spoon 1 ½ c. meat sauce and sprinkle with ¼ c. Parmesan cheese. Do the same layers twice to make three layers. For the final layer, add another layer of pasta, then top with 1 c of the meat sauce, followed by the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Tent the dish loosely with aluminum foil.
Step 6: Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for another 25 minutes until the cheese is brown.
Step 7: Remove from the oven when done and serve the lasagna hot. Enjoy!
NOTES:
If desired, you can swap the wine with red wine, beef broth, or chicken broth.
If making ahead, prep and assemble the lasagna. Tent the dish and keep it in the fridge for up to 48 hours until planning to bake. Or freeze the lasagna (adjust the baking time as needed until the lasagna is completely heated).
