Oh, man, you need to give this recipe a try to taste perfection! I love how all the ingredients compliment well with each other. Feel free to add more ingredients if you wish. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
2 pounds hearty French bread or hearty sandwich bread*, cut into ¾-inch cubes
2 ½ – 4 ½ c low-sodium chicken broth
3 large Eggs
1 teaspoon salt, more or less to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 c unsalted butter, diced into 1 Tablespoon pieces
2 c chopped yellow onion
2 c chopped celery
2 teaspoon minced garlic
⅓ c chopped fresh parsley
2 ½ Tablespoons chopped fresh sage or 2 ½ teaspoons dried
1 ½ Tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 1 ½ teaspoons dried
1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary, or 1 teaspoon dried, crushed
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
Directions:
Step 1: Prepare the oven and preheat to 250 degrees.
Step 2: Divide the bread cubes into two 18×13-inch rimmed baking sheets and spread them evenly.
Step 3: Place the baking sheets inside the preheated oven and bake until the bread cubes are completely dried. Make sure to rotate the pans and toss the bread 3 times.
Step 4: Remove from the oven and let them sit at room temperature to cool.
Step 5: Turn the oven temperature to 375 degrees F and place the oven rack in the middle.
Step 6: In a measuring cup, add in 2 ½ cups of chicken broth, eggs, salt, and pepper. Beat until well mixed.
Step 7: Place a 12-inch skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium.
Step 8: Add in the butter and allow it to melt.
Step 9: Add in the onion and celery. Sauté for 10 minutes or until the veggies are translucent.
Step 10: Add in the garlic and sauté for a minute or until aromatic.
Step 11: In a large mixing bowl, add in the dried bread cubes, sage, parsley, marjoram, and rosemary.
Step 12: Add in the cooked veggies and drizzle the chicken broth over. Toss until everything is well combined.
Step 13: Add more chicken broth if needed.
Step 14: Transfer the mixture into a grease 13×9-inch baking dish and spread it evenly on the bottom.
Step 15: Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil.
Step 16: Place it inside the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees F.
Step 17: Remove the cover and bake for another 15 – 25 minutes or until done.
Step 18: Remove from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature.
Step 19: Serve and enjoy!
Notes:
Make sure not to use a fluffy sandwich or French bread because it will not absorb well compared to hearty ones.
You can use 15 cups of store-bought unseasoned dried bread cubes instead of fresh cuts.
